The prototype molds have a significant advantage for the designs that are still in concept stages and for the product that has a low-volume manufacturing need. For prototype molds we use cheaper material, simplified the complex features and machined with less precision to minimize tooling cost.

Developing a prototype injection molding solution for your custom plastic part can help you to avoid some common mistakes before production begins such as surface and appearance defects, non-uniform or unreasonable wall thickness, incorrect gate type or location, material shrink, etc.

3D printed mold is well known as the rapid prototype mold. It is a visual prototype to help you get an idea of what the product looks like in the reality. The manufacturing time of 3D printing is much quicker than traditional injection mold tooling and the cost is much less. However, 3D printed mold is not a functional prototype mold and not representative of true production molding conditions.

We can also provide a prototype plastic mold that made with aluminum. It is not only a prototype but also a functional plastic mold with low volume production. Aluminum is softer than steel, so for a mass production and longer tooling life, the steel injection mold is the best way.

In our local way, we utilize standardized components, like an existing die base, or pre-hardened, uncoated tool steel that do not require post machining heat treatment. Generally speaking, we use cheaper material, simplified the complex features and machined with less precision to minimize tooling cost. We usually use 45# (AISI 1045) to make prototype mold. This type of steel has reasonable tensile strength and easy to machine and also cost-friendly

For the final mold that required high volume production, better steels need to be chosen such as P20, 718, 8407, NAK80, H13, S136, DIN 1.2738, DIN 1.2344, etc. While choosing steels for mold, we need to consider the wear resistance, obdurability, fatigue strength, high-temperature property and corrosion resistance. Depend on each custom mold design, our designers will help our customer to choose right tooling steels.

How can I get a Quotation for a custom injection mold?

Confirm Product Design

If you have product design, you can just send to us. We accept both 3D and 2D. JIAH prefer 3D CAD file in format such as STEP,IGES,STL, X_T,etc. 2D CAD drawing is also acceptable with reference dimensions in format DWG and PDF.

If you don’t have product design, we also accept samples. Please provide samples to us, we have skilled mold designers and engineers to help you with the product design and mold design.

Below are some factors that will affect the cost of mold in design aspect.

Complexity: the complexity of your part design, the more complex, the higher the cost

Size: the larger the part, the higher the cost

Cavity Structure: such as single cavity, multiple cavity and combination cavity. The number of cavities determined how many parts will produced per machine cycle. Increase the number of cavities in mold will increase the mold cost, however, lower the cost per part.

Mold can be made with different types of materials depending on your requirements. We choose the material according to the final production demand.

Surface Treatment of Mold

A good surface treatment can increase tool quality and longevity such as Pre-Hardening, Nitriding, Carburizing, Plating, Physical Vapor Deposition(PVD), Chemical Vapor Deposition(CVD) and Spray Coating.

Payment Terms


Since every mold is customized, it can’t be secondary sale.

Expect in very special cases, our payment term is 50% advance T/T to start production, after the mold is produced and sample is confirmed, the 50% balance T/T before shipping. Terms are negotiable with each individual customer.
